Trust & Safety

Privacy and anonymity
Keep your personal info private

Don't rush! Only swap your personal details when you feel ready to. RSVP has been set up to offer members a safe mailing system so that you don't have to swap personal email addresses or phone numbers until you are ready. We recommend you keep your correspondence within our system until you feel comfortable to share your personal email address. Be suspicious if someone immediately wants to take the conversation off the site.

If you do decide to share any contact details, we suggest you use Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail or another free email service provider. We suggest you don't share your work email address or your surname, as it makes it easy for someone to find out more about you via Facebook or possibly through your place of work.

Playing it safe
Trust your instincts

If it's too good to be true - it probably is! And if you feel uneasy about someone, online or offline, there's probably a good reason. Don't tell yourself you're being anxious.

Trust & Safety is Spaceble’s number one priority!

Spaceble’s number one priority is to provide a safe and easy way for you to make the most out of your spare space and make a little extra cash while doing so.  And if you need to rent spare space for self storage, our aim is to make both the space renter and the person renting feel as confident as possible.

So here’s some suggestions we urge you to take:

  • Don't rush into anything!
  • Always keep your personal info private. Only swap your personal details when you feel ready to. We offer Spaceble members a safe mailing system specifically so that you don't have to swap personal email addresses or phone numbers until you are ready. We recommend you keep your correspondence within our system until you feel comfortable to share your personal email address.
  • Be suspicious if someone immediately wants to take the conversation off the site. If you do decide to share any contact details, we suggest you use Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail or another free email service provider. We suggest you don't share your work email address or your surname, as it makes it easy for someone to find out more about you via Facebook or possibly through your place of work. • Trust your instincts!

How can I trust someone I don't know?

Spaceble is built on the fundamental goodness of people treating others the way they’d want to be treated.  However, Spaceble has no control over the conduct of our members or the truth or accuracy of the information that members provide in their space listing. Because we are a community, sellers who treat their customers well get rewarded with better star rating. This means they’ll get more business from you and others in the future.  It’s no different than any other retail store, café or service provider —good service means repeat customers.

While it’s impossible to completely remove the risks associated with peer-to-peer, we have provided a number of tools to help facilitate trust and reinforce security within the Spaceble community.

These tools include:

  1. Personal (anonymous) profiles including the use of a “Spaceble nickname”.
  2. Private messaging -  to communicate and get to know fellow members before releasing any details.
  3. Member rating feedback - rate members to tell others of your experience.
  4. Secure payment system via PayPal.
  5. Suggested template to make sure the transaction is more transparent.

Spaceble safey tips

We all know the basic rules around getting to know a person, but here are some tips to ensure a happy Spaceble community for both the person wanting to rent spare space, as well as the person looking to make extra money with their spare space:

Space Owners

Space Renters

1. Set the right expectations

Accurately describe your space, condition and accessibility and include as many photos as you can.

Specify your storage requirements – if you would like peace of mind, you may want to:

  1. Take a photocopy or photo of your Renter’s license.
  2. Complete a Condition Report  including photos of your pre-lease item/s and the space. It’s important that you agree and confirm the state of each other’s property.  Both parties should have signed copies.
  3. Agree on the timing for regular updates to the Condition Report  including photos of the condition of the space and the item/s being stored (i.e. monthly or 6th Monthly or yearly).
  4. Agree to the terms and conditions of accessibility to the item/s.

1. Make an informed decision

Look for a space listing with a good description of the space and which has photos.  Ensure you understand the space rules or condition as well as the accessibility.  Communicate and confirm your questions about any space conditions.

Specify your self storage items – if you would like peace of mind, you may want to:

  1. Take a photocopy or photo of your space owner’s license.
  2. Complete a Condition Report  including photos of your pre-lease item/s and the space. It’s important that you and the space owner agree and confirm the state of each other’s property.  Both parties should have signed copies.
  3. Agree on the timing for regular updates to the Condition Report  including photos of the condition of the space and item/s being stored (i.e. monthly or 6th Monthly or yearly).
  4. Agree to the terms and conditions of accessibility to your items.

2. Get to know the potential Renter

Communication is the key!

Ask the renter questions via the Spaceble private messaging system. Communicate until you feel comfortable enough to provide further details of your space listing location. Communicating via this facility also creates an electronic trail if you ever need it.  In addition, check out the renters’ Spaceble profile and feedback.

Find out and agree from the Space Renter:

  1. What they would like to store and what is the purpose for self storage?
  2. The list of items being stored.
  3. For how long they would like to store or park?
  4. When they would want access to their self storage item/s?
  5. Who else do they want to allow authorization to access their storage space?
  6. Agree on any conditions of the lease.
  7. Agree on sole risk and responsibilities (i.e. what you’ll do and what you will not do/cover in case of flood, fire, spillage of material, water overflow, pests and so on.)
  8. Agree how any insurance claims will be dealt with while the item/s is being stored.
  9. Agree on the terms and conditions of the lease,  like a rental agreement.

  8. Agree on the terms and condition of the lease, like a rental agreement.

3. Trust your instincts

You are always in complete control of who rents out your space as well as the details you would like to release.

Do not hand the lease over for your space if you feel uncertain about the transaction even after meeting the potential renter.
